OPENING RECEPTION SATURDAY, JULY 5 6-9pm

Montanaro Gallery of Newport, RI will host 'SIGNS OF THE FUTURE', featuring all new original art by Jesse Reno and Michael Paul Montanaro, with an Opening Reception on Saturday, July 5th from 6-9pm.

Jesse Reno, who currently resides in Portland, OR, has created all new mixed media paintings on wood surfaces for this show. Reno's art can best be linked with the outsider art and art brut movements. His paintings draw inspiration from primitive cultures of Africa and South America, with figures often stacked up on totems, faces overlapping, and people often morphing into animals remniscent of ancient shaman beliefs. The cosmos, animals, stars, and spirits are recurrent themes in his new body of work. Reno paints spontaneously and impulsively, constantly overpainting and redeveloping his works until the pieces themselves reveal a completed state.

"I approach painting with random intentions to give a sense of natural order.. its integral to my process, as well as my intentions. I attempt to find meaning through separating myself from my thoughts and then following them through with my actions." -Jesse Reno

Michael Paul Montanaro of Newport, RI has created all new paintings and silkscreens on paper and cotton for this exhibition. Like Reno, Montanaro's newest works also look towards ancient art forms for inspiration. The new works range from original paintings, measuring 66 x 96"
inches, to 18 x 24" limited edition prints. His works can best be described as abstract art meets oceania with elements of asian calligraphy. While mostly abstract, certain symbols such as wind, water, the moon, and the sun remain consistent throughout these works.

The two artists new creations compliment each other while being completely different in execution and subject matter. Reno's works are vibrant and expressive, and full of characters, while Montanaro's are made up of mostly two colors, including many in black and white, which consist of patterns, abstract shapes and lines.

Signs of the Future will be on display at Montanaro Gallery from July 5 through August 3 with an Opening Reception on Saturday, July 5th from 6-9pm. All are welcome to join us for this free artful event.
