MONTANARO GALLERY: MIKEY WELSH BIO

Mikey Welsh

Walking through the studio of Mikey Welsh is quite an experience. Painted skate decks stand against one wall, surrounded by hundreds of acrylic paint tubes; one of Mikey’s 2009 Burton snowboards stands in another. Scattered on the floor are collage cutouts, torn newspapers, globs of paint, and dozens of small personages screaming with life and color. In another room, one will find colossal masterpieces stacked against the walls. On the floor of this room, Mikey has several unstretched canvases spread out. These works are colorful, instinctive, and expressive, like Mikey’s life itself.

Inspiration for his works range from primitive cave art to the infamous Cobra art movement. Karel Appel and Asger Jorn, whose raw approach has nurtured Mikey’s creative development, led the Cobra movement.

Before his studio art era, Mikey Welsh experienced remarkable success as a talented bassist for the popular band, Weezer.

Mikey Welsh’s artistic voice is innovative and powerful, personal and universal. Judging by his former achievements in his life, his artistic talent will soar to infinite heights.
