“Clearly snowboarding has influenced the lives of countless
people and now
more than three decades since the culture was born, there are legends
and
legacies that have shaped the sport. They deserve respect for their
bold and
unique views and spirit- they should never be forgotten. This generated
the
inspiration and guided the work I developed.
You may find the collaboration of this work
intriguing, as I based the art
on photography David Roby and I created almost 20 years ago. The piece
is a
series of portraits of Craig Kelly, a true hero in snowboarding. A
rare
individual and friend who saw the mountains like no other, and had
an
authentic vision regarding a snowboard's smooth and fluid relationship
to
nature, similar to the way he viewed his life; a harmonic relationship
with
nature. Sadly, Craig died in an avalanche riding in January of 2003.
The
original photos were captured in 1992- the day Craig returned from
riding in
Russia to compete in the US Open in Stratton, VT. I created with Craig
on
many levels over the years- filming, making images, board graphics,
clothing. He taught me how to correctly turn a snowboard in Chile.
The piece is a sequence of images and emotions
guided by my respect and
relationship to Craig and snowboarding itself.”
