MONTANARO GALLERY: JULIE GOLDSTEIN BIO

Julie Goldstein

Julie Goldstein’s work draws directly from her life experiences. A lifelong surfer who’s ridden waves in Hawaii, California, Central America, and native East Coast, her days are often dictated by the winds and the tides. Goldstein spent every summer of her childhood on Long Beach Island, where she now lives and works.

Goldstein is quickly becoming recognized internationally for her elaborate woodcut prints. She draws directly on to blocks of wood, and then hand carves, and prints the woodcuts onto paper, canvas, and even fabric. Her work is inspired by her experience in the surf community, as well as more urban influences from time spent living in Brooklyn and obtaining her MA from Columbia University. More recently, her organic-style is increasingly documenting women in art, surfing, and travel.

She also designs her own line of apparel, aptly called ‘Perfect,’ producing unique, hand-stitched and hand-printed shirts and accessories that reflect her experiences in and out of the ocean.

In addition to appearing in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Japan, and Brazil, her work has hung in the Surf Art Gallery and been part of “The Happening,” which brings the visual art, film, and music of surfing together in one event.
