Before his studio art era, Mikey Welsh experienced remarkable success playing bass guitar in the rock band Weezer. Since leaving the music industry, Mikey has devoted his passions and energy towards his love of creating visual art. From sculptures and collages to paintings and drawings, Mikey does them all with a unique and original style." - Michael Paul Montanaro We, at Montanaro Gallery, are deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Mikey Welsh. Mikey was a very talented artist that we had the priviledge of representing in Newport, RI and beyond. He was so loving and tender-hearted. He was also obsessive and prolific in his studio. He created a sizeable and very impressive ouevre in the short amount of time that he had “rediscovered” himself as an artist after leaving the rock band Weezer. It’s clear by looking at his paintings that they were in there all along, exploding with potential. His works were some of the most expressive, from the inside out, that we’ve seen by any contemporary. It’s comforting to know Mikey released so much before he left us and now has peace. His artwork graces walls, his music graces the air, all over the Earth. He sacrificed so much for all of us who are blessed with all he created in his lifetime. It is unprecedented.
